This site will be devoted to showing, telling, and describing the multitude of historical information that is available about the great city of Brockville, Ontario.
This cartoon below is from “It Happened in Canada,” a regular newspaper drawing feature similar to “Ripley’s Believe It or Not”. The drawings and details were created and researched by Gordon Johnson and published many years ago for many Canadian newspapers.

I am currently reading courtship letters written by Amelia Houghton (Brockville) and Thomas Hunton (Bytown). These letters were written during the 1840s. Amelia’s father was Luther Houghton. She was born in Brockville in 1821. Amealia mentions several people who were living in Brockville at this time. She was a recent graduate of Victoria College in Cobourg. I am hoping to write a book based on these letters as I have about eighty of them. I want to buy a good history book about Brockville’s history if anyone can suggest one that would be great.

Hello, Mary.
We do have a new book on Brockville history. It is entitled “The Story of Brockville” written by Glen J Lockwood.
I don’t believe that Canadian web book sites like Amazon.ca, Chapters, or Indigo will have it listed. You might test my opinion, though.
The local book store in Brockville, Leeds County Books will, however, have it on their shelves. They can do mail order, if you want to phone them at 613-342-5728. You probably will get Pat or Jake Belanger, if you call the store.
The book will be about $50 plus S&H. It is a big hard-cover edition of 660 pages.
We know of Luther Houghton, but not so much about his family.
The index in Lockwood’s book indicates that Luther Hougthon is mentioned on pages 158, 168, 189, 213, and 523.
Hope this helps.
